Thompson Survives Rough duel for the 200

JEROME, IDAHO (August 3, 2010) Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho had a long tow to Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho for round seven of the ten race CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series. His ride home was even longer as he finished outside the top ten for only the second time this season.

Thompon qualified his RTTI Dodge ninth quick putting him 12th in the 20-car invert to start the 100-lap NAPA Duel for the 200. Heading into the event Thompson was thinking points as he sat second in the standings just a mere six points out of the lead.

The tight field cars made passing difficult on the quarter-mile paved oval but Thompson made the most of it moving forward where he could find a seam. By the mid-point of the event he was hovering around the fifth position but essentially so was everyone else.

Over the final 40 circuits the heat was on and track position became a premium as several of the fast qualifiers made their way forward.

By lap 80, Thompson was in a fierce battle for the 7th position with Lynn Hardy and the two tangled several times tearing at each others body panels. Each time they battled for the position, they touch but kept their cars pointed in the right direction. Unfortunately for Thompson, the contact slowed his forward momentum and he dropped outside the top ten to eleventh over the final laps. The position where he would finish.

While the finish was disappointing, the result could have been far worse if not for the other point contenders also struggling. Thompson dropped to third in the standings but is only one point out of second and 26-points out of the lead heading into the final three races of the season.

“We missed the set up by just enough to put us in the position we were in,” Thompson said. “It could have been worse for us at least we are still right there in the points even though we lost 19 points to Jones. We’ll get ‘em at RMR.”

Thompson has five top three finishes including one win. His other two results are a 15th and 11th place finish. Next up for the Thompson Motorsports team is the RMCS NAPA 125 at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley, Utah August 21.
