The 6th race of NASCAR West K&N Pro series was contested on 25 June, 2016. The race venue was the very scenic Sonoma Raceway where sunny, 90 degree days, greeted both the Race Teams and the fans. Again, Johnny Borneman III was the driver of record for the #61 RTTI sponsored Ford Fusion road-race car. The car itself was brand new, built by the Thompson Motorsports Race Shop, and completed just 3 days prior to heading for Sonoma.

Surprisingly, the #61 car went on track and immediately produced better than expected practice times. Unfortunately, a number of small issues developed and repairing those issues took valuable time away from the two scheduled practice sessions. This resulted in the TMS pit crew working long after the practice sessions were over. That situation led to Johnny Borneman III qualifying in a car that was quite different than the one he practiced with. In spite of this disadvantage, the #61 car was driven to a surprising, and satisfying, mid pack qualifying position. More importantly, during his ‘after Qualifying’ comments, Johnny Borneman III said he thought that the car would race very well.

However that was not to be, at least as it applied to the word RACE! After several parade laps the Green Flag waved starting the race. Immediately after that a huge accident occurred at the very front of the pack. Clearly, with no way to avoid the ensuing carnage, the #61 car was crashed out of the race, before it even reached to Starting Line! Every Driver, and every Team, is aware that an issue such as this is a real possibility and one that is beyond their control – but the Disappointment is still very real.

Race Time … and Johnny Borneman III has his most special fans to cheer him on!

Friday’s first practice session, and, the car was surprisingly good.

Second Practice Session: again the car was good but minor problems resulted in reduced practice laps.

Driver Introductions and Johnny’s wife and son are joined by friends as they wait for the formalities to begin.

Johnny and daughter at Driver Introductions: Watch out Danica, there is a cute new girl in town!!

The cars begin the first of 4 parade laps.

The last Parade Lap: Unfortunately the #61 car would be caught up in a huge accident – of someone else’s making – before it even crossed the start/finish line! The trite old saying “that’s racing” does not convey all of the hard work and effort in getting to this point … nor the disappointment experienced by all involved.
