Mission Accomplished for Thompson at Iowa

Seventh Overall and Third Among the West Propels Thompson in Points

JEROME, IDAHO (May 24, 2011) Brett Thompson, driver of the RTTI/Jerome Truck Service Inc. Chevrolet, moved back into the championship fight for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West after a strong seventh place performance (overall) and third among his West counterparts in the annual East/West combination race at Iowa Speedway this past weekend.

A disappointing qualifying effort had Thompson back in the 26th position of the 40-car field to start the 175-lap contest on the 7/8-mile high speed oval. While qualifying on the speedways is typically about bragging rights, Thompson knew he had a car that would race well.

In a race that was slowed seven times for a total of 43-laps, Thompson used the early part of the race to let things sort out and advance his position as the situation allowed. By lap 20, he had moved up to the 18th position running lap times on par with the leaders.

At the lap 50 mark, Thompson had moved into the tenth position as the car was starting to hook up. After stopping mid-way through he race for tires and fuel, Thompson battled back inside the top ten ten and never lost sight of the leaders the rest of the race.

Over the closing laps he dueled with Ryan Gifford and Coleman Pressley from the East series with Gifford getting the sixth position with three laps to go. Thompson crossed the finish line in the seventh position to record his fourth top ten finish at Iowa.

“This season is about big picture racing and we need to finish strong at each race,” Thompson said. “This is a great finish for us at Iowa and being third among the West is exactly what we need. I have always loved racing at Iowa as it is a fun track to drive and suits my driving style. We had a great car and it worked out pretty well to get us back in the points.”

Thompson has started six races at Iowa (five East/West combination races and one West stand alone event) scoring two top five and four top ten finishes with his best qualifying effort of second back in September of 2009. Thompson has completed 987 of 1101 laps and has been running at the conclusion in five of his six starts at Iowa

In his NASCAR K&N Pro Series career, Thompson has started 103 NKNPS races since 2000 scoring one win, one Coors Light Pole Award, 22 top five and 59 top ten performances. His best points finish was fifth in 2009. Brett Thompson is currently tied with fellow Idahoan Jonathon Gomez for sixth in the 2011 standings after four races just nine points out of fifth place.

The next event for Thompson Motorsports and driver Brett Thompson is Saturday, June 11 at the Bullring in Las Vegas, NV.  It will mark the series’ return after an eight year hiatus. In three previous series events at the Bullring there have been three different winners.

Thompson Motorsports is also fielding a car for John Wong in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series where Wong is currently second in the point standings with two top five finishes in the first two races this season. Thompson Motorsports and John Wong will be in action on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at Rocky Mountain Raceways outside SLC, UT.
